FLESH AND GRAIN?

You might be wondering why the brand is called Flesh and Grain—and you’re not alone. Many have had the same thought at first glance. The name Flesh and Grain represents the two sides of leather. Every leather has two distinct surfaces: the flesh side and the grain side.

The flesh side is the part of the hide that originally faces inward, sticking to the animal’s body. It has a fibrous, textured appearance. This side can be split and tanned to create various leather articles such as suede, crackle, unlined suede, and many others. Its versatility is one of the reasons it’s highly sought after for suede and other unique finishes.

The grain side, as the name suggests, has a naturally grainy surface. It’s the outer layer of the animal’s skin, where the hair originally grows to protect against harsh environmental elements. There are two main types: hair-on leather, where the tanning process retains the hair, and full grain leather, where the hair is removed. Full grain leather is further processed into articles like aniline, semi-aniline, napa, full veg-tan, semi veg-tan, chrome-free, and many more, each with its unique qualities.
